On Friday 7 October from 11am to 4pm, the demand for electricity was covered 100% by renewable energy sources for at least five hours. This day can be considered a milestone in the energy transition as for the first time in Greece’s history, renewable energy is the absolute dominant energy source in the electricity system.

According to data published by ADMIE, the production from renewable energy units connected to the High and Ultra High Voltage, ranged from 98% to 121%, reaching 3,106MW. You can see the percentages per hour in the image below.

ADMIE says that new green power plants are in high demand from investors and the country is now surpassing the 10 GW barrier. In addition, the increasing contribution of renewables to the energy mix has significant economic benefits for consumers. As reported by the Hellenic Wind Energy Scientific Society on the occasion of Friday’s unprecedented rate, the October electricity cost for consumers is 94 euros per megawatt hour for wind farms, 190 euros for lignite plants and 499 euros for gas plants.

It is now a fact that the energy transition is not something distant, something out of reach. It has already begun, and the record set by Greece on Friday is tangible proof of this.

100% renewable energy means 100% prosperity and sustainability.
