2023 has emerged as an excellent year for the solar PV market in Greece, according to the preliminary data of the Association of Photovoltaic Companies (HELAPCO). New photovoltaic installations reached 1.6 GW, bringing the total capacity to 7 GW and setting a new record for the country. Interestingly, there has been a continuous upward trend since 2018, with SEF forecasting a new record of 2 GW for this year.

Of the total capacity, around 250 MW is for net-metering systems, with 20% being residential. The capacity of stand-alone systems reaches 450 MW. Interestingly, photovoltaics covered about 19% of domestic electricity production in 2023, putting Greece in second place worldwide, after Chile. This percentage significantly exceeds the European Union averages and the global average.

Globally, 2023 was also a record year, with new installations reaching around 400 GW. What does this mean? That more than 1 GW of PV is added daily, highlighting the market’s significant growth. It is highlighted that around €1.1 billion was invested in PV last year, supporting around 15,400 jobs.

This important record in the country’s photovoltaic market complements, as we mentioned in a previous article, the very important record of wind energy. According to ELETAEN, for the first time, the attributed wind power in Greece exceeded 5,000 MW.
